We had the chance to see the drastic difference of an HID light compared to a stock FL light on a long ride home on some of the darkest backroads in Southern California, and immediately we just had to get our baggers some white light. The next day, we got in touch with Kuryakyn and got our hands on one of their Xe7R Xsighting Lighting HID headlamp kits.
After doing some reading up on the HID kit, we found that it has a few more benefits than we thought. It reduces draw by 47 percent, lasts 10 times longer than a halogen bulb and is three times brighter than an H4 lamp. The Xsighting Lighting kit also utilizes a single light source for both the high and low functions in the form of a cover that slides back and forth, eclipsing the light for the given task. The kit fits 1980-and-newer FLHT models as well as '94-and-newer Road Kings and is a direct fit that took less than two hours to install with hand tools.
The parts are top quality and fit with no bending or tweaking. The chrome on the trim rings was also top-notch. The kit came all in one box with well-thought-out and easy-to-follow directions. The one thing that we thought may have looked odd was the extension ring that came with the kit. A much-needed part of the kit, it allows a deeper area for the conversion to fit inside the bucket. Our worries were quelled after the final install. It actually looked right at home on the bike, if not better than stock.
After the install, we took the bike out to our favorite piece of dark, desolate highway for our own results and were very pleased with the HID conversion. So much so that now it looks as if we need to punch out the motor of our test bike to see if we could actually ride faster than the light's limitations.
