Overall RatingOil temperature is important to an engine because oil breaks down when it gets too hot and loses its lubricating and cooling qualities. But how do you know when the oil temperature is getting close to the breakdown point? An oil temperature gauge will tell you what's going on. There are two types of oil temperature gauges available form Harley-Davidson. The first and most popular type is the oil temperature gauge/dipstick combination. The second type is the handlebar-mounted self-contained gauge. The dipstick gauge reads the temperature of the oil in the oil tank. The handlebar-mounted gauge utilizes a temperature sensor fitted in the feed oil line from the oil tank to the engine. Both styles of gauge give a pretty accurate accounting of the oil's temperature as it would flow to the engine. The first type is much easier to install than the handlebar-mounted style; you simply pull out the original dipstick, wipe it off, and insert the new dipstick. To check the temperature of the oil, simply push the button on the face of the gauge and the temperature will be illuminated for about 5 seconds. It doesn't get any easier than that when it comes to fitting a new part or accessory.
