Not long ago Mark Blanton was employed by an auto salvage yard in Indianapolis where he bought and sold cars from insurance companies. About five years ago he moved down south where he hoped to combine his love for bikes with his salvage-yard-savvy skills into a sustainable business. His experimental merger yielded Knock 4-6 Custom Cycles. His first few builds were based on salvaged bikes brought back from the dead, then he started buying repo bikes. He always kept his titles clean and made sure that every bike was (and is) legal and documented.
Based in the motorcycle-friendly weather off of the northeast of Florida, and just south of Jacksonville, Mark’s shop concentrates on modifying late-model baggers, specifically Street Glides and Road Glides. “My shop’s focus is narrow but there’s a reason for it—I have all the parts I need for those models on hand all the time. In-stock parts and model-specific fasteners enable me to do custom work faster and with more experience than shops that claim to do everything,” Mark said.
The origins of this particular Street Glide can be traced to a chance meeting at a Harley dealership. Steven Osetkowaski had just finished a disappointing discussion with the dealership’s service manager regarding taller-than-stock front wheel options for his ’09. “I overheard Steve-O’s conversation and told him to come by my shop to talk about the wheel conversion. Let’s just say that he chose to work with me instead of the dealership for a variety of reasons,” Mark said. The big wheel Steven wanted was about 5 inches taller than stock, rising from a 16-inch to a 21-incher. The larger wheel meant the suspension lengths had to be adjusted in order to look and ride properly, and Mark lowered the bike in the front and rear accordingly.
The nature of the bike’s new, aggressive rolling stance suggested custom, but it had to look and sound the part as well. Knock 4-6 Cycles specializes in bike electronics, and included many of its enhancements on Steven’s bike. A custom shooting/flying star H-D logo was integrated into the rear fender with a myriad of LEDs to make up the taillights and matching turn signals that span the gap between fender and bags. “I can have just about any design you can think up made into a taillight and lit with LEDs,” Mark said.
When rewiring and reworking the rear lighting, Steven decided that the rest of the bike ought to have some electronic enhancements as well. The hand controls are internally wired through the handlebars to keep the rider area clean. Completing the bike’s bulb-less-ness; the headlight and turn signals in the front were converted to LED versions, too. Mark installed a JL Audio 10-inch sub and 500w amp in the corner of the right-hand saddlebag, a pair of 6x9-inch speakers can be found in each of the saddlebag lids, and a pair of 6.5-inch speakers round out the audible devices and are located in the fairing.
Over the course of the months it took to build the bike, Steven learned more about Mark than he intended to, but also found that he liked the Knock 4-6 business plan and Mark’s goals for the company. Eventually, Steven began working bike shows part time as a PR person for Knock 4-6 and has since helped create its social media presence and enhance its website. “Business is booming, and I have bikes on back order. My only regret is not opening up the shop sooner,” Mark said. “If you need a custom bagger, just call in for an order. Depending on what you want, I can probably have it to you in about six weeks.”
