2006 Harley-Davidson Road King Custom - Frank's Super King

A Labor of Love

A Labor Of Love
When Frank Williams was first introduced to Harleys he fell in love with Road Kings. Soon after he got his first Road King, finished in burgundy and black in late 2007 he was able to complete one full riding season before the '06 RK was stolen from his house in June 2008. That July Frank went into the bike lab and started building his new bike. As a more seasoned rider he was able to accomplish what he didn't do on his first bike.

Frank started the build after purchasing a two-inch stretched Paughco bagger frame that he had painted a beautiful black cherry. Since he was starting from the frame up Frank needed a builder to help him out. A friend of his introduced Frank to Phil, the owner of Strictly Hawgs in SoCal. From that moment on Frank spent countless hours with Phil whether it was helping with the build or compiling a list of parts he'd need to keep things moving. Building this bike quickly became a full time job for Frank and his girlfriend Karyn. Some days he was at one Harley dealer and Karyn was at another at the same time buying everything needed to complete his masterpiece. This was a project they did together and instead of going to the movies on a Saturday or Sunday they were out looking at new stuff and buying needed parts. By December Frank had pretty much everything he needed parts-wise except for having the hopped-up Twin Cam getting diamond cut.

Instead of sending the heads, barrels, and cans off to Diamond Heads, Karyn and Frank took the 300-mile drive to Las Vegas. They left on a Sunday night and dropped off the parts the next morning when Diamond Heads opened. The pair waited patiently for them to be finished then drove back to L.A. that same night. After seeing his bike almost complete Frank decided to run all chrome Allen screws. Before he settled on the seat that's on the bike now Frank went through three different seats. The colors just didn't seem to vibe right so he kept going back and getting a new one made. During his last trip to C&C Seats Frank had his side covers with him trying to find a color that was right. Just when Frank was about to give up Karyn kept asking the guys, "is this all the colors you have? What's under the counter? Do you have anything in the back?" Surprisingly the guy pulled out a roll of alligator that was the perfect shade of orange with a hint of burgundy. Now all he had to do was get the motor tuned in time to debut the bike at his bike club's first run of the season to Phoenix this past April. Larry Hardy was able to squeeze 115 hp out of the 95ci motor.

It was an invigorating feeling pounding on the King along the open highway. Frank hadn't been on a bike since '08 and not only was he on a bike but on a cool custom he had a hand in building. It was a long nine months but it all paid off. During the building process Karyn saw the passion Frank had for bikes and has now become interested in riding her own bike. That's Frank's next project so keep an eye out in Baggers for it!
