Now how did Kevin find this particular niche in the biker world? He actually got the idea when he was working for Bayliner Marine molding prototype boats and parts. Back in 2000 Kevin wanted to put a fairing on his Road King, but back then no aftermarket fairings existed. Well, boats are made of fiberglass and so are fairings, so Kevin decided to make his own fairing, adding an awesome stereo system and speakers. He rode to a local bike rally and got a lot more attention than he expected...along with requests for fabricating fairings for them too. Kevin thought there just might be something to this so he made several fairings using Harley's factory paint schemes, and set up a booth at the next bike rally. He sold and installed every fairing he brought and made back his investment in a single weekend. Dragonfly Cycle Concepts officially opened its doors shortly after in 2002 and is now up to 11 employees, including Mrs. Dragonfly: Sandra Winland.
Dragonfly fairings can be added to any Road King, Fat Boy, or Heritage and are based on the factory windshield mounts. Available in any factory paint color that Harley-Davidson makes, once the fairing is shipped to you, it's an easy install in under an hour. Kevin shared a new product he has that will be available very soon: a 6 1/2-inch full-color LCD screen that's mounted into the fairing that can tie in to all the factory gauges, showing everything from the speedometer, tachometer, oil pressure, gas gauge, GPS, along with the stereo settings. Of course, it's fully waterproof.
Well, Kevin put me on two different baggers that he completely customized, both with insane stereo systems. On Sunday's Run, for a few minutes, I was really missing my chopper. I forgot about it about two minutes into groovin' on Kid Rock as soon as we hit the highway. I couldn't resist blasting the sound while in the staging area for the Run-just watching everyone stare in amazement at the incredible sound coming out of my fairing and literally dancing on the street. Even on the run, I had Seattle's motorcycle cops racing to get up alongside of me, to listen for a mile or two, then giving me the thumbs up and riding to the next street to block traffic. I really get it. OK? I've already put dibs on his blue bagger should it ever come up for sale.
