(1.)The tapered axle cover kit comes with its own Allen wrench; notice that there are two internal sizes of the axle covers. The smaller internal opening (A) is for the left or nut side of the front axle, while the larger internal opening (B) is for the right side of the axle.
(2.)Each tapered axle cover uses a set screw to hold it in place on the axle; simply hold the cover over the axle and tighten the set screw.
(3.)When positioning the axle covers, we put the set screw on the bottom of the axle where they would be out of sight. On the left side or nut side position axle cap, the set screw will tighten on one of the flats of the front axle nut.
Chrome axle caps from H-D
An issue or two ago, we fitted new, chrome, 80-spoke wheels with floating rotors, which we think improved the appearance of our Harley-Davidson 2007 Pacific Blue FLHT Standard. But still, there was something lacking ... something unfinished. This "something" was the cadmium-plated end of the front axle, which is sticking out past the beautiful chrome lower leg. Well that should be easy to solve, we thought as we reached for the 2008 H-D Parts & Accessories catalog. All we had to do now was select which axle cap set we wanted--there are a few different styles to choose from.
We selected the tapered front axle kit in chrome, of course, to finish off our front axle on both sides of the bike. Start to finish took 20 minutes, and we put the Allen wrench that is included in the kit in our onboard tool kit.
