Noel Kaai is no stranger to custom bikes. In addition to his history with tricked-out sport bikes, he previously owned a Big Bear Pro Street sled that was built by Mikey’s Speed Shop in Hawaii. While Noel loved the chopper to death, he eventually sold the big bad bike because it was just too uncomfortable for two-up riding with his wife, Tami.
After selling the Big Bear, Noel knew that he wanted a real-deal Harley but he was not quite sure of which model to add to his collection. Softail Deluxes were so popular in Hawaii, but he was determined to be different from all the rest of the islanders. Noel eventually saw a bone-stock Police Edition Road King, and he really liked the original Birch White paint scheme. He told himself that he wanted to keep the traditional Harley-Davidson look but give it a custom look that would be forever changing.
After taking delivery of his new ride and before changing up his new Road King, Noel spent hours researching the path his new project would take. Noel finally found Bad Dad’s website where he found his inspiration: Ronnie Cooley’s Road King, which was featured in the June 2007 issue of HOT BIKE. Noel discovered that the custom bagger parts were manufactured by Bad Dad and he says he fell in love with their clean, smooth style, and he has been dealing with Bad Dad ever since. In addition to being featured in HOT BIKE, Ronnie’s Road King was also featured on Bad Dad’s website. So, Noel had a goal: to build a custom bagger that would also be featured in a magazine and Bad Dad’s website. Noel says that building a bike of that caliber “would give [him] a sense of accomplishment, especially since [he did] most of the mock up and assembly in [his] very own garage.”
Noel’s bike features a handful of Bad Dad parts, including Bad Dad’s 4-inch Saddlebag Extensions, Stretched Rear Fender, Stretched Tank Shroud, and Stretched Headlight Nacelle. His most recent transformation includes the Street Glide batwing fairing and a few other powdercoated Street Glide parts on the frontend. He also raked and stretched the neck to fit his 26-inch front wheel to make the frontend more radical. Noel kept the original floorboards, air cleaner cover, and hand controls but had the stock metal parts powdercoated black by Noah from Mekala Powdercoat and Patio. The bike’s stance was also improved with the aid of a Progressive Suspension Airtail system and Hog Halters Raked trees.
Noel’s bike got to where it is today after countless hours in his home garage. He would like to thank his daughter Gabryn’s awesome photography, friends Duane from DA Customs for the stock color match and paintjob, Robin from Cycle City who helped with the front forks, Noah for the powdercoating at Mekala’s, uncles Domi and Flo for the weld work, Deljon for the 26-inch front wheel customized by Noel’s Technique’s, and his wife Tami for all her support. Noel’s Road King is forever evolving, and he still has a lot of things that need to be crossed off his list. B
