It has been told time and time again that you can't screw with perfection even though perfection is only a fragile state of mind that varies from person to person. In short, one man's dream of a perfect looking bike is another man's nightmare. While we at Baggers are all for personal expression, the problem that most folks have while building a custom bagger is the lust to bolt every kind of doo-dad that they can find including the kitchen sink on the bike. While this may be good for the likes of Rube Goldberg or Antonio Gaudi, it just doesn't make for a clean looking cycle.
Polo Herrera is a perfectionist by trade. He and his crew at H&H; Motorsports lift and lower some of the worlds most exotic rides daily, so it was natural that when Polo finally got the sickness known as B.O.B. or "Baggers On the Brain," his H-D was going to be one clean motorcycle.
Polo likes the things he rides and drives to have a simple and classy look, so he started off with a bone-stock '04 Road King in pearl white. After riding the FLHR in its stock configuration for a very short period of time, Polo quickly yanked the OE 16-inch 40-spoke wheels and Dunlop tires off and hooked himself up with a set of all chrome 21-inch front and 16-inch rear twisted 60-spoke wheels with matching chrome rotors from Landmark. To add to the vintage gangster look he was after, Polo went with Avon white wall rubber in front as well as out back.
With the additional amount of chrome on the bike due to the plus-sized wheels, Polo knew that the Road King needed more of the shiny stuff to gain perfection. After weighing his options, Polo went crazy with both the Harley-Davidson and Kryakyn parts and accessories catalogs, installing almost to excess, engine, transmission and various other chrome covers as well as dress up parts. A set of true-dual header pipes with un-muffled Sampson fishtails were bolted on for that classic Vato look and sound. Up front, the stock fork lowers were swapped out for, you guessed it, chrome replacements. Further up the fork legs Harley-Davidson visor rings were installed around the headlight and running lights, with the amber signal lenses being swapped out for the clear variety. To finish off the pimped-out front end, Polo went with a set of Burly 1 1/4-inch beach bars outfitted with a set of H-D chrome hand controls topped off with Accutronics turn signal mirrors and billet handgrips. In the seating department, Polo wanted to sit his ass on some class, so he reconstructed and recovered a Harley-Davidson P&A; aftermarket seat with some gator skin and embroidered it with the H&H; Motorsports logo.
This bike is a case in point that perfection can come in many shapes, sizes and amounts of money, but if you know exactly what you want and can achieve it with your own hands and mind, you too can ride your own two-wheeled nirvana.
